How to Transition Your Cat to a New Food Safely

Avoid tummy troubles with our step-by-step guide to switching your cat’s food.

Changing your cat’s food isn’t always as simple as swapping bowls overnight. Cats have sensitive stomachs, and sudden dietary changes can lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, or refusal to eat altogether.

Whether you’re introducing your cat to Catit Recipes dry food or treating them to our delicious Cuisine wet food, here’s how to transition your cat to their new food safely and smoothly.

Why is a gradual transition important?

Cats’ digestive systems need time to adjust to new proteins, flavours, and nutrients. A gradual switch helps:

  • Prevent stomach upset or diarrhoea

  • Allow your cat’s gut microbiome to adapt

  • Encourage acceptance of the new food without stress

How long should a food transition take?

We recommend transitioning over 7-10 days for most cats. Some may take longer, especially if they are older, sensitive, or very fussy eaters.

Step-by-step guide to switching your cat’s food

  1. Days 1-2:
Serve 75% old food, 25% new food mixed together.

  2. Days 3-4:
Serve 50% old food, 50% new food mixed together.

  3. Days 5-6:
Serve 25% old food, 75% new food mixed together.

  4. Day 7 onwards:
    Serve 100% new food.

Tips for a successful switch

  • Stick to routine. Feed your cat at the same times each day to build confidence around their meals.

  • Avoid adding treats or extras during the transition to keep their diet stable.

  • Monitor their stools and appetite. Loose stools or refusal to eat are signs to slow the transition down.

  • Be patient. If your cat is particularly fussy, extend each stage by a few days to help them adjust.

What if my cat refuses their new food?

If your cat is refusing their new food entirely:

  • Try mixing a small spoonful of their favourite wet food into their dry food for added appeal.

  • Warm the food slightly to enhance its aroma.

  • Offer the new food when they are hungry, but never starve them into eating it.

  • If refusal continues after a gradual transition, consult your vet to rule out underlying health issues.
